One week in Bali

Today marks exactly one week we are in Bali. So far so good. Woke up again without alarm at 6:20AM. Had a morning prayer & read the Bible. Then Theo woke up by himself, approached me in my now-he-knows prayer-room. He wanted milk, so I made one and he watched me reading bible, while he enjoyed the milk lying on the bed. Then we took a morning walk together around Lembah Pujian. I really love the morning walk now, I can have a chit chat with my son, converse with God and be healthy.

8:00 I already took shower and started preparing a business proposal for my prospective client. Sat down in my PC so long and finished around 4PM.

Even Fenie left with the children before lunch time to go to ADC, bought lunch at Leko, shopped at Ace hardware and visited Kumon for Abigail to start tomorrow. During lunch, she coincidentlly met Donny & Firca, so they had lunch together.

We were grateful for this place we are staying now because everything was beautiful. The children get to play with some kids around the neighbourhood. And this morning they borrowed a basketball to play just at the court next door. Apparently our front neighbour had the land and they built the court for the son. So it's good, our children can play. It's like a public basketball court =)

Then we took a nap together, but not Gail.

Had dinner at home together with Donny & Firca for the first time, home cooking...yum yum.

After that we visited Kiky & Lia for the first time. We went to the pet shop in Setiabudi. Had a chat with them and the children enjoyed a play with the dogs. They enjoyed it.

Going home, Fenie dropped by at a small shop called 'kaki 5' to buy some pail, cutting board and a small badminton toy for the kids.

Then this blog... going to sleep now after a little browsing because tomorrow 8AM auntie Susi invited me to a Christian meeting 'The Mission', similar like Full Gospel.

ok, see you in the morning.

PS: missed IN today because the lady we invited cancelled.

Where are you Jessica?

We went to Airport at 10.30 to arrive at 11.30, waiting for Jessica (Fenie's young relative from Sweden) to arrive to no avail. We found out later at 2PM that she missed her morning flight from Bangkok.

So we hunted for Japanese food because Gail wanted Udon, we came around one at Kuta, name Tensaki. It's ok, but not excellent.

Then we visited ADC for the first time at Buluh Indah near Gatot Subroto. It's small as expected, compared to Jakarta. Many of the products were behind of what Jakarta is, but OK we build it anywhere.

Along the way, a property agent called us after we contacted them from Internet the night before. She showed us a Townhouse behind Sushi Tei in Sunset road, but we didn't like it. It's too small, the kids didn't have too much space outside the complex and it got the sunset which is quite hot.

Driving back, we passed Sunset Garden, which Donny had mentioned before and the marketing girl is actually one of his friends. So we get to see a display unit. The area is good, the houses are minimalist, modern but one thing that I don't like is the security gate and the fully-equiped security guard. It's just not Bali. It looked like Jakarta. Nothing beats Lembah Pujian, so far.

Finishing around property, we get to the beach again. This time we return to our first beach, Petitenget. We liked the area because there are not many people and the sunset is beautiful. Eat bbq corns the five of us... but I couldn't enjoy it as something stuck my eye. I thought it was the arang, when it was fanned by the guy. My eyes were really hurt for 3 hours, couldn't drive and enjoy my dinner. It still last even after I took shower.

We had dinner at home, for the first time we ate home cooking. It was good, great, except a little annoyance of my hurt eye. It hurt a lot actually. So I decided to go the doctor. I asked Fenie to send me to a hospital around 8.30PM. We found a near one, Nikki Medika. The place is quite nice. We met a lady GP and she took a bit of stone (the size of a sand) from my eyelid. It was so small but it was so so irritating. but I thanked God so much, for the doctor, she was helpful and kind. I thanked God I could see again and enjoyed opening my eye.

Then we watched movie in Donny's room, enjoyed the talking with the kids annyoing him =)

nite nite...

Sekolah Lentera Kasih (SLK) and Sekolah Tunas Daud

2 days late writing my blog... I hope I can keep it for at least a few months, better... one year :-)

in the morning, we registered Theo to Tunas Daud, a school backed by the ROCK church in Kebo Iwa, Denpasar. Fenie wants to put him there to get the discipline and spiritual guidance.

We got to have lunch in Tiara supermarket in Gatsu, there's a decent food court with a variety of food.

Then we went to intersection of Petitenget & Batu Belig to see Alex, a young property agent to send us see 2 houses. They were not our types, close to beach is good but it was more like villas to a short-term holiday people.

After that, we drove to Kerobokan to register Gail for school.

Then, a nice afternoon nap.

Waking up, we drove to Kuta beach, right at the front of Kuta Square. Stuck in traffic, we got there too late at about 6:20PM where the sun was setting. But it didn't spoil our night, the children and us walked to the beach just outside Discovery mall and there was lot of lights there. We stayed there until 7.30PM, the kids have fun with their sand tools for the first time after it arrived with the car.

Then home...

To pick or to see strawberry?

Weekend was over, but the feeling and activity still cling on holiday. The children is on school holiday anyway.

Woke up at 4:00AM, sleepily pray and read the bible until 5:00AM
Then I worked on making a proposal for my prospective client till 7:00AM

Have a morning walk with everyone now.

Then we got a surprise, our car in Jakarta has safely arrived this morning, delivered by my father's friend's brother. The car was filled with many of our stuff, including the children's bicycle. One thing I'm happy about is we got our gadget, GPS navigator, which we needed so much because we got lost so many times here. Thanks to my Papa.

Continued work till 14.30

Then we drove to Bedugul area to visit two strawberry farms. One they do not have picking facility and the other one was closed. But we still enjoyed the drive, the scenery at the lake and mountain. The GPS has saved us by guiding us there and around the trips today.

So we drove back and had dinner at Italian resto Goody's which is seaside at Double Six street in Seminyak. The food is good which is not too expensive and Fenie quite likes it. The children were also able to eat. And we had a chance to speak with Umbi, the friendly Italian resto manager who can speak Indonesian as well. Before we left, Fenie and I each had shot of Italian alcohol drink, lime and chocolate flavour. yummy....thanks Umbi

Then we managed to play in the sand just outside the resto, which has a bright light and the children could play in the playground and build some castles in the sand.

The good thing in Bali, we can see such a thing in our daily life. God is awesome with all His creations...

good nite.

First sermon in Bali: Blessings for Obedience

This morning I woke up and took a walk with Gail and Bila. Did some work on the business project and after that we attended our first church service at ROCK (Representative of Christ Kingdom) at Lembah Pujian. The pray, praise & worship is great, God's presence is really there to touch the lives of people in Bali. And today Fenie & I are really blessed by the word of God through Ps. Paulus Bambang. He spoke something that what both of us personally need: the whole passage of Deutoronomy 28 (Ulangan). Thank you God. So Thomas, which would you choose: Obedience or Disobedience? The obedience passage will be our theme / mission in Bali...and the same Indonesian version underneath it.

After church, we met Madi & Asri coincidentally. Madi is our church friend in Jakarta and he was surprised that we are here in Bali, because he just knew that we had moved here. We had lunch at the ROCK canteen just downstairs, it has quite a variety of food. I love nasi bakmoy, and Fenie had gado2.

When we finish, we met aunt Susi who introduced us to someone who wants to sell her house in Lembah Pujian. It was quite big for a small family like us, but we won't reject if God would open up the heaven and gifve it as a gift for us =) (like the sermon)

Then the four of us took a nap for 1 hour, the first time since we were here, we must have been exhausted. After that, we drove to Sanur beach. To our surprise, the beach was not as impressive as the one in Petitenget. Sanur was too crowded, there were millions of people there...and the sand was black.

After playing with some sand and witnessing the brutal act of ngaduin anjing (dog fighting) until one of them get some blood, we had dinner at Warung Warung in Mal Bali Galeria, again. Quite a nice food, but felt expensive eating in mall after getting used eating at warung or rumah makan. Warung in Bali is not a warung like in Jakarta (kaki lima), but warung here is more like a Rumah Makan. Then I went straight to Gramedia, having a Sale and Fenie & co to Matahari to buy some home clothes for Gail. I bought two books: Travel guide to Bali & Lombok and buying Directory in Bali. I guess those two would be useful for our spare time here and future business plan.

Deuteronomy 28 (New International Version) Deuteronomy 28 Blessings for Obedience 1 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: 3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. 4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. 5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. 6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. 7 The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. 8 The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. 9 The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your God and walk in his ways. 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you. 11 The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your forefathers to give you. 12 The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. 13 The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them. Curses for Disobedience 15 However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: 16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. 17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. 18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. 19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. 20 The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him. a]">[a] 21 The LORD will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess. 22 The LORD will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, with blight and mildew, which will plague you until you perish. 23 The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron. 24 The LORD will turn the rain of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed. 25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven, and you will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms on earth. 26 Your carcasses will be food for all the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and there will be no one to frighten them away. 27 The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. 28 The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. 29 At midday you will grope about like a blind man in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue you. 30 You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and ravish her. You will build a house, but you will not live in it. You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit. 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. 33 A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression all your days. 34 The sights you see will drive you mad. 35 The LORD will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head. 36 The LORD will drive you and the king you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your fathers. There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone. 37 You will become a thing of horror and an object of scorn and ridicule to all the nations where the LORD will drive you. 38 You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little, because locusts will devour it. 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine or gather the grapes, because worms will eat them. 40 You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off. 41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity. 42 Swarms of locusts will take over all your trees and the crops of your land. 43 The alien who lives among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. 44 He will lend to you, but you will not lend to him. He will be the head, but you will be the tail. 45 All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the LORD your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever. 47 Because you did not serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. 49 The LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old or pity for the young. 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine or oil, nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined. 52 They will lay siege to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the LORD your God is giving you. 53 Because of the suffering that your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the LORD your God has given you. 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, 55 and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities. 56 The most gentle and sensitive woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter 57 the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For she intends to eat them secretly during the siege and in the distress that your enemy will inflict on you in your cities. 58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name—the LORD your God- 59 the LORD will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. 60 He will bring upon you all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The LORD will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law, until you are destroyed. 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky will be left but few in number, because you did not obey the LORD your God. 63 Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess. 64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known. 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. 67 In the morning you will say, "If only it were evening!" and in the evening, "If only it were morning!"-because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see. 68 The LORD will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again. There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=deu%2028&version=31
ULANGAN 28
28:44 Ia akan memberi pinjaman kepadamu, tetapi engkau tidak akan memberi pinjaman kepadanya; ia akan menjadi kepala, tetapi engkau akan menjadi ekor. 28:45. Segala kutuk itu akan datang ke atasmu, memburu engkau dan mencapai engkau, sampai engkau punah, karena engkau tidak mendengarkan suara TUHAN, Allahmu dan tidak berpegang pada perintah dan ketetapan yang diperintahkan-Nya kepadamu;
28:50 suatu bangsa yang garang mukanya, yang tidak menghiraukan orang tua-tua dan tidak merasa kasihan kepada anak-anak;

Visit people... visit people... visit people

Third day we decided to rest by visiting our parents' friends, the family of Kiode & Linda and Kiuni & Susi. This might bore the readers, but i'm gonna take everyday experience into account anyway. Here it is...

06.15 woke up a bit late today
06.40 started pray, worship and read bible
07.15 gail woke up, looking for me, she thought I went out & found me in my prayer room
07.30 we have a morning walk around Lembah Pujian: gail, theo, nabila (daughter of the house caretaker dahyat & mul) and myself. I asked them to come along as I told them we could see dogs. This has become a morning routine, a good and healthy one as we can have quality time. We managed to see some dogs, which the children are happy and a bit afraid as they are foreign. We also found some putri malu which the children encounterd for the first time.
08.30 read book "commanding the supernatural" & shower
09.00 internet
11.00 went out to have lunch, we tried one rumah makan Kedaton near the house at Gatsu
12.30 bought some bread for the host
12.45 drove to auntie Susi home in Nangka Selatan, had a long chat about school and nice places in Bali. We found out that the local Balinese people don't appreciate the beauty and exotic life offered here. We the Jakartans are really fascinated with everything here. Hope it will not diminish as we become the "local" here.
14.30 drove to uncle Kiode home in Teras Ayung and had a chat for a few hours. The kids were happy to play a little playground in the house and a pool table.
16.30 drive to dyatmika national plus as some people say it's good. but we were not impressed with the school condition. hungry, we eat bakso gerobak on the way home, and bought satay from ibu at pinggir jalan. not excellent, but quite okay.
17.30 drive home
18.00 take shower and get ready to pick up auntie susi
18.30 went out with aunt susi as one of her nephew open a fast-food resto in mal Bali galeria, it was a nice time with some of her family. There were tens of them, our impression is that they are very friendly, kompak and seem to communicate between each other quite often. the children had a little game at timezone after dinner.
21.00 shopping to get my sandals: daily & beach sandal
21.30 drove home
10.20 arrive home and write this blog
11:50 zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Visiting our friends at the Bali Zoo

Another dusk wake-up at 4.30AM, having a prayer and bible devotion to my upmost high God for 1.5 hours. Then have a sunrise walk with Fenie around the home, with the river.

First visit of the day is to bring Abigail have a preview at her future school, SLK (Sekolah Lentera Kasih) at Kerobokan, just behind the Lollypop pre-school. This is a National Plus with English as instruction, it is a branch from the Sunter, Jakarta SLK school. We like this Bali one as half of the students are international so our children get to speak in English environment. This area is near to beach area, Kuta, Seminyak and also lots of bule (westeners) live near here. The school is built around the rice field (sawah), it's quite a typical property surrounding in Bali, but is quite a fascinating view for Jakartan people such as us. Gail and Fenie liked the idea that it has a half-size olympic swimming pool, soccerfield just outside the classes, on a 3-storey building. We looked at the art and computer room, most of the area is new and minimalist design. Maybe I can post some pictures later...

Next, we were hungry.... had lunch at Warung Murah, a kedai makan near the school area. Had some kangkung, telor cabe, chicken, teh botol, sup kepala ikan, etc. Guess how much? It was only 30 ribu. It would probably cost double or triple in Jakarta. The owner even has a salon, which has barber price, only 10ribu for a man haircut. So it's good I found a place to do my routine haircut.

Then we drove to our main of the day, Bali Zoo in Gianyar, so it's quite a long drive from the South to the North. We didn't have GPS so we had to rely on the map and asked many people on the way. We made it and we like the concept of the zoo, it's built on top like a hill with beautiful surrounding of the trees and it is nicely maintained. Gail & Theo started with 3-minute horseriding at the entrance. Then we proceeded to see crocs, birds, monkeys, snakes and ended with the animal show called "Zoo Stars" at the restaurant. There were bats, binturong, lion cub (kid). We took photo as a family with the last one. Overall, it was a nice variety of animals at the zoo.

Last, we went to Carrefour as we needed to do a lot of groceries as we miss lot of things needed in Bali. The drive was again a very long one as we had to go around and asked people the way. First we arrived in Carrefour at Imam Bonjol, but we didn't feel like to go in there, we cancelled it and went straight to Carrefour at Sunshine road. It was the better choice, much more nice shopping center with lots of shops and a bookshop. The good thing is we got a farewell gift of Carrefour vouchers from a friend, so it was really great. Helped with the spending.

Had dinner at the foodcourt, it was a nice time to close the day.

at 10AM we went home, it's a 12 hour trip for the day. Shower and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. See you in the morning.

A new life in Bali

Almost 3 weeks ago Fenie & I were in Bali, surveying for children school and a place to live. Today, 17 June 2009, we fly for a permanent move from Jakarta to Denpasar. At 20:40, we board the plane in tears, waving to 12 dear family and friends:

Papa & Mama
Papi & Mami
Cun2
Felix & Lulu2
Ci Ita
Darwin & Novi + Aaron
Uni

5 of us, Thomas, Fenie, Gail, Theo and Dina on Garuda Indonesia GA414 leaving CGK 21:00 arriving DPS 00:15. The kids were excited on the plane, with Theo running all over the plane ailes.

Thank God that all the luggage fit into 1 car avanza and we arrived home safely
